The University of Birmingham Hockey Club is a very popular, successful and well known club within the Athletic Union. The club has 4 ladies and 4 men’s teams who compete at both university and club level. The Mens 1s play in the Slazenger EHL National West while the Ladies 1s the EHL National Premier. Each team also plays in BUCS premier league on Wednesday afternoons. The Ladies 1s are extremelly lucky to have a world class coach in the way of Philip Gooderham while the Men's 1s are currently looking for a new coach after the retirement of Malcolm Wood.
The club is also very proud of our other 6 sides that all compete at a very high level. The ladies 2nd team play in the midlands regional premier hockey league at the weekend, while the 3rd and 4th teams currently compete in the Warwickshire hockey leagues. All three ladies sides play in the BUCS Midlands league, with the 2nd and 3rd teams both competing in the Midlands 1A division, which is the highest they can go, while the 4th team compete in the division below and in 2008/09 won Gold. The men’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams all compete in their respective Midlands Premier Leagues, facing other quality Midlands hockey sides such as Cannock and Beeston at the weekend. On Wednesday afternoons they all compete in BUSA with the 2nd and 3rd teams competing in the Midlands 1A division and the 4th team in 2A. All 3 teams are therefore in the highest league they are allowed to play in, with the 4s being crown league champs in 2007/08 and the 2s 2008/09.
All training sessions and matches for all our teams take place on the two brand new international standard water-based pitches, which are located on the main campus near to the Aston Webb buildings. While the Social Side plays a big part of the hockey club, it is what happens on the pitch that is so impressive. Our style of play is well known throughout the university hockey scene and it is because of this that we have been consistently in the top three university hockey teams for both men and women in the UK over the last decade. The club organises a level 1 umpire course and a level 1 coaching course each year that is subsidised by the club. This allows every member the opportunity to earn extra qualifications and also practise them throughout the season. We are a very social club and one of the few university hockey clubs that is fully integrated between women and men, which gives us an unrivalled club atmosphere in the university hockey scene.
