Massive congratulations to Sarah Haycroft who won the Higgins Female Youth Award, two years after Sophie Bray received the award. A further well done to Emily Atkinson and Pete Jackson who were runners up in their respective category.
The Higgins Awards recognise the outstanding boy and girl in youth hockey in the UK at age 18 and under. The 2009 winners received their prizes at the annual Hockey Writers’ Club presentation ceremony held at the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
Report from the Awards night:
"Sarah is a very mature performer, calm on the ball, with good elimination skills and an excellent attitiude and work ethic to the game." Sarah started her university career playing 1st XI on Wednesdays and 2nd XI on Saturdays, but quickly forced her way into the Saturday 1st XI. She is confident and mature beyond her years. Sarah has gained caps with England U16 and U18 squads and went to Boston last summer as part of the England U21 World Cup side where the team achieved fourth position. Very recently she was called into the England indoor squad contesting the Europeans at Rouen, France.
Emily started her university career playing 1st XI Wednesday and 2nd XI Saturday but an injury to another player gave her a chance early on and she stepped up to the 1st XI against Slough when she acquitted herself so well she has been a regular in the team ever since. Has played England U16 and U18 and captained the England U18 squad to gold at the UK School Games in Cardiff in September 2009.
"Pete has fantastic all-round ability excelling at football, rugby and cricket as well as at hockey. He is very level headed and plays the game in the correct spirit." Pete joined South Cheshire HC and went on to represent Cheshire. He has also taken on a coaching role at Congleton High and umpires school matches.
On behalf of UOBHC congratulations to Sarah, Emily and Pete for their fantastic achievements.
